Manchester United winger Sam Mather is considering a transfer away from Old Trafford, with a possible switch to the UAE on the radar among options under discussion for the youth footballer.
The 21-year-old was absent from United’s Under-21 side that faced Brackley Town in the National League Cup on Tuesday, a match the young Red Devils lost 2-1. His omission has fuelled speculation about an imminent move, though no agreement has yet been confirmed.
According to BBC reporter Simon Stone, Mather’s absence from Tuesday’s game is another hint that talks are ongoing over a potential move to play in the ADNOC Pro League where the transfer window is still open.
Stone posted a tweet on his X social media account, saying: “Sam Mather not involved in @ManUtd National League Cup game last night. Negotiations continuing around UAE move.”
Reports from UK and regional outlets have linked UAE club Shabab Al Ahli with interest in the winger. The domestic champions are understandably touted as likely suitors, given they are also in the Asian Champions League Elite division this year. When contacted by Aletihad, a club spokesperson said they would be able to only confirm a move, if an official decision is made.
Other British media reports, including the Manchester Evening News suggested, that Mather, who has not made a senior appearance for United, is keen to step into first-team football after progressing through academy and loan spells.
Mather was close to a transfer earlier this month when Turkish side Kayserispor attempted to sign him on deadline day, but the deal collapsed when both clubs agreed there was insufficient time to finalise the paperwork.
Mather joined the United Academy in 2010, later signing his first professional contract in 2021. He has since had loan stints at Rochdale and Tranmere Rovers, while also being part of United’s 2024 pre-season tour of the United States.
The UAE transfer window remains open, giving the player and his representatives time to consider options both domestically and abroad. Whether Mather departs on loan with a view to a permanent deal or secures a direct transfer remains unclear.
For now, Mather remains contracted to Manchester United until the summer of 2027, with his future expected to be resolved in the coming weeks.
